Retrotainment was born out of a love for the 8-bit era of gaming and retro culture. Being exposed to the golden age of gaming really left its mark on us in the early 1980s while growing up in suburbia. This prepared our young minds for what was to come in 1985... the gray box that forever changed gaming! That love has carried through to today motivating us to start Retrotainment Games.
Our dream was simple, we wanted to create an NES game that could be put onto a cartridge and played on the original hardware. That same gray box that we spent countless hours playing on our old tube TVs in between re-runs of the 1960s Batman and staying up to date on the world of studio wrestling.
The dream was realized in 2015 after assembling the Retrotainment crew, comprised of five guys with a shared love for retro gaming, pop culture and pushing the limits of what we could do together. We created and released Haunted: Halloween '85 for the NES on cartridge in October of 2015. It began as a simple gray cartridge release of 30 units at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo and blossomed into what you see today.
Since the initial release Haunted: Halloween '85 has been released on not only the classic gray cartridge but on what we call "zombie green" and a special short-run on red cartridges that was sold exclusively at the Retro Game Con in 2016. The game has since been released digitally on Steam for players that don't have access to original hardware and also released on Famicom cartridges with the dialogue fully translated into Japanese.
We knew we had more of the story to tell and more game to develop and so, with the continued success of ͛85, we decided to start development on the sequel. Haunted: Halloween '86 (The Curse of Possum Hollow) went live on Kickstarter at PAX EAST in 2016 and was funded in less than 24 hours. '86 is also available on gray cartridge as well as "pumpkin orange" currently. It was only available to Kickstarter backers in "zombie green" for a limited time to match their copy of '85. The game has since been released digitally on Steam and on Famicom cartridges with Japanese dialogue.
With each new game release we do our best to improve mechanics, backgrounds, gameplay and music without compromising our vision and all while staying true to the NES's complex hardware restrictions. After a year of taking '85 and '86 around the country to various conventions we decided to start a new series...
Full Quiet. This mystery adventure was Kickstarted in September of 2017 and fully funded by over 500 backers. We are currently taking pre-orders through our Backerkit site.
And oh yeah, we partnered up with iam8bit to bring the Street Fighter II 30th Anniversary SNES cartridge release to life. As you can see, we are committed to the rebirth of cartridge gaming!!
We feel the cartridge has so much life left.
We're listening.
